But a new clinical trial is pointing to something that could change how people understand these medications and how they influence behavior.
Research suggests GLP-1 medications target craving and addiction itself, not just the urge to eat, including the desire to drink alcohol.
A randomized controlled trial found that semaglutide (a GLP-1 receptor agonist) significantly reduced heavy drinking days in adults with alcohol use disorder and obesity — raising a bigger question about whether GLP-1 receptor agonists might help treat other addictive behaviors beyond food.
Researchers recruited treatment-seeking adults with both moderate-to-severe alcohol use disorder and clinical obesity, randomized them to once-weekly semaglutide (at the 2.4mg weight-loss dose) or a placebo injection, and followed them for 26 weeks.
Everyone in the trial also received cognitive behavioral therapy. At baseline, participants were averaging around 17 heavy drinking days per month.
By the end of the trial, the GLP-1 group had reduced heavy drinking days by 41 percent, compared to 26 percentage points in the therapy group.
For context, semaglutide outperformed the effect sizes typically seen with naltrexone and acamprosate, the two medications currently approved specifically for alcohol use disorder.
The likely reason comes down to where GLP-1 receptors live. They're not only in the gut and pancreas, regulating blood sugar and appetite, but they're also in the brain's reward and motivation centers, including areas that process craving and the dopamine-driven pull of addictive behaviors.
The belief is that semaglutide quiets those signals. Food noise was already the accepted term. The emerging question is whether alcohol noise and, potentially, other reward-driven urges are part of the same system.
That said, more research should help provide more clarity. This was a single trial in people who met clinical criteria for alcohol use disorder, not social drinkers or people who occasionally overdo it.

The performance hit is real. Dehydration impairs exercise performance, degrades motor skills, and, in some studies, has been associated with effects on memory and mood.
And here's what makes it worse: thirst is a lagging indicator. By the time you feel it, you're already behind.
The genuinely encouraging part of this research is what happened when people drank fluid afterward, even when they didn't fully rehydrate.
Drinking something can quickly improve your performance. It didn't matter much how much participants drank or when; partial rehydration still moved the needle. The biggest gains came during longer efforts and in hotter environments, but the benefit showed up across conditions.
