Groggy Mornings? Check Your Meal Planning

If you wake up and don’t feel like you have as much energy as you want, a slight change to your nutrition could make a difference.

Research suggests that eating fewer meals per day could help you feel more alert and awake in the morning.

Scientists studied how sleep quality, physical activity, and food impact morning alertness. They found that better sleep quality and early morning workouts help you wake up with more clarity (working out later in the day appears more likely to make you groggy the next day).

However, interestingly, people who ate more often (4 to 5 times per day) had less focus and energy in the morning compared to those who ate fewer meals per day.

Generally, if you’re struggling in the morning, sleep quality and duration are the first place to start. If you’re overtired, allowing yourself to sleep helps increase your alertness. Then, focus on more daytime movement and activity. If you check both those boxes and still feel exhausted, it might be worth testing how often you eat and see if that helps give you a boost.

Weekly Wisdom

The Mediterranean diet has a lot going for it — fish, fruits, vegetables, and fewer processed foods. But the health benefits might be deeply tied to one food in particular.

New research suggests that the Mediterranean Diet might be healthy because of its emphasis on consuming more olive oil.

In a new study, researchers collected all the best available observational evidence on the long-term health effects of olive oil. The research included over 2.7 million people, with studies lasting from 3.5 to 28 years. They found that consuming more olive oil was associated with a 15% lower risk of heart disease and a 23% lower risk of heart disease-related death.

In addition to being high in heart-healthy monounsaturated fat, extra virgin olive oil is full of polyphenols that can help reduce blood pressure and control blood sugar.

If you want to experience the benefits, you don’t need to bathe all your food in oil. The researchers found you’ll experience health benefits with just two tablespoons daily. That means you can get your heart-healthy fix by adding a tablespoon or two when you cook, using it as a salad dressing, or even dropping a tablespoon into your favorite smoothie.
