And last August, one event showed the power of giving back and reinforced our tagline — we all have the strength to lift up the world. 

The fires in Maui in August 2023 were devastating, destroying entire neighborhoods and historic sites and leaving many residents without homes, food, and essential resources. It was one of the deadliest U.S. wildfires in over a century. The fires displaced thousands of residents and disrupted the local economy and food supply chain, creating an urgent need for relief and resources.

When devastation hits, you’re reminded that life doesn’t always go how we want. Tragedy and heartache are built into the fabric of life. 

But those difficult times can also bring out the best in people. 

In the wake of this disaster, Maui Nui, a local company dedicated to sustainably managing the island's axis deer population, stepped up to support recovery efforts. By donating fresh, locally sourced venison, Maui Nui Venison is helping to re-feed the island and support those impacted by the fires. 

We discovered Maui Nui because their venison caught our eye as “the healthiest red meat on the planet.” Some slogans lack meaning and substance. But Maui Nui backs it up with an island-to-table approach that offers red meat a cardiologist would approve. 

And yet, somehow, creating a nutrient-dense meat that is heart-healthy is the least impressive thing they do. 

Maui Nui is providing nutrient-rich meals to displaced residents and first responders, and contributing to long-term ecological balance by managing the non-native deer population, which has posed environmental challenges for Hawaii.

The axis deer in Maui cause environmental havoc, even harming the coral reefs by causing runoff from eating all of the grass. Maui Nui has developed the only stress-free and 100% Wild harvest systems. 

This meat isn’t mass-market food. There’s purity and beauty in how the venison is prepared. That can only come from an intimate connection to the land and animal. 

Their method is so respected that Fast Company selected them as one of the “Top 10 Most Innovative Companies in Agriculture.” Not only are they doing good for the environment, they are also taking care of their community. 

The Maui Nui ʻOhana has proven its deep purpose through its Holo ʻAi Food-Sharing Program. 

As of today, more than 179,000 pounds of venison have been shared with their community.  That means they have given back more than 716,000 meals to families and individuals in need. 

We have told this village many times that we only partner with those we believe in and buy from ourselves.
